July & Aug Looks in review

Tuesday, August 30, 2011

One of the best things about having a blog is being able to review my looks when I feel like I have nothing to wear. (And believe me, it happens all the time!!) Here are some of my favorites over the past two months.

And now... onto Fall! xx

Thrifted floral top & really good friends

Monday, August 29, 2011

I have really good friends. The little munchkin's birthday party was a success yesterday, due in part to so much surrounding love by family and friends.
And speaking of amazing friends, how cute is this vintage floral top my friend and partner over at Secondhand Star got for me?! She's pretty much a thrifting Goddess, and I'm proud to say it's all because of me! (Well, not entirely, she has a killer eye, but let's just say... before my influence she never set foot in a thrift store & her style has never been better!)
Thrown over these vintage Todd Oldham slacks I haven't worn since last Christmas - (see here) because I forgot I had them! Do you have that problem? I guess I need to do another closet organization soon...
Have a lovely week and check back in for a giveaway, event & tons of birthday photos.

Happy Birthday Baby Stella...

May you grow to be as lucky as your mommy has been in the friend department...
(May you be lucky enough to call some of those friends your sisters.)
May you feel pretty in that killer outfit... not because it's new, but because it's uniquely you.
May you dance on beds and sing at the top of your lungs...
And pretend, and wear paper hats, and believe in make-believe...
And catch that firefly, only to let it go...
Just spread those little wings as far as they'll go.

Morning after...

Saturday, August 27, 2011

Hi friends! Finally getting back into the swing of life after all of our travels. In addition to work (and sometimes work that feels like play -- I just had business drinks & dinner at The BazaarA-mazing...) I'm a day away from hosting my two year old daughter's birthday party. As I was neck high in dirt yesterday, laying sod down in our backyard like a crazy lady, my friend looked up at me and said "You know you're an overachiever, right?" - Guess that's the story of my life lately... trying to do too much, too often, and constantly thinking "If only there were more hours in the day..."
But I'll keep going strong because after all, these are the years to make things happen, right? I can always sleep tomorrow.

Calypso Kelli Lace Dress

Wednesday, August 24, 2011

We decided to walk to dinner and drinks to meet one of our favorite couples, at one of our favorite restaurants, so I opted for comfy walkin' boots (the moto kind) and a favorite black blazer to top off this chic little dress!

First, Lord: No tattoos. May neither Chinese symbol for truth nor Winnie-the-Pooh holding the FSU logo stain her tender haunches.
May she be Beautiful but not Damaged, for it’s the Damage that draws the creepy soccer coach’s eye, not the Beauty.
When the Crystal Meth is offered, may she remember the parents who cut her grapes in half And stick with Beer.
Guide her, protect her when crossing the street, stepping onto boats, swimming in the ocean, swimming in pools, walking near pools, standing on the subway platform, crossing 86th Street, stepping off of boats, using mall restrooms, getting on and off escalators, driving on country roads while arguing, leaning on large windows, walking in parking lots, riding Ferris wheels, roller-coasters, log flumes, or anything called “Hell Drop,” “Tower of Torture,” or “The Death Spiral Rock ‘N Zero G Roll featuring Aerosmith,” and standing on any kind of balcony ever, anywhere, at any age.

Lead her away from Acting but not all the way to Finance. Something where she can make her own hours but still feel intellectually fulfilled and get outside sometimes and not have to wear high heels. What would that be, Lord? Architecture? Midwifery? Golf course design? I’m asking You, because if I knew, I’d be doing it, Youdammit.
May she play the Drums to the fiery rhythm of her Own Heart with the sinewy strength of her Own Arms, so she need Not Lie With Drummers.
Grant her a Rough Patch from twelve to seventeen. Let her draw horses and be interested in Barbies for much too long, For childhood is short – a Tiger Flower blooming Magenta for one day – And adulthood is long and dry-humping in cars will wait.

O Lord, break the Internet forever, that she may be spared the misspelled invective of her peers and the online marketing campaign for Rape Hostel V: Girls Just Wanna Get Stabbed.
And when she one day turns on me and calls me a Bitch in front of Hollister, Give me the strength, Lord, to yank her directly into a cab in front of her friends, for I will not have that shit. I will not have it.

And should she choose to be a Mother one day, be my eyes, Lord, that I may see her, lying on a blanket on the floor at 4:50 A.M., all-at-once exhausted, bored, and in love with the little creature whose poop is leaking up its back. “My mother did this for me once,” she will realize as she cleans feces off her baby’s neck. “My mother did this for me.” And the delayed gratitude will wash over her as it does each generation and she will make a Mental Note to call me. And she will forget. But I’ll know, because I peeped it with Your God eyes.
"Amen.”

Travel Hard

Monday, August 22, 2011

... It's exactly what I've been doing lately. And while I'm the first to want to jump on that plane and try something and some place new, these past nine days have nearly done me in.
I've been to a bachelorette weekend in Providence, a few days to help the bride sort the wedding madness in Boston, a (blessed) night out in NYC, a hop-skip-&-a-jump over to a campground in the-middle-of-nowhere CT for the actual ceremony, back to Yonkers with family, airport hell at JFK, and finally, finally back to our final LA/Venice Beach destination called home.  (We're probably mid-flight as you read this. Fingers crossed!)
The wedding was amazing, the girl time - even amazing-er. But now I just need my bed, my two loves, my dogs, (please, dear God, no more delayed flights) and back to business as usual. It's true - There's no place like home.

P.S. - why are there so many Dunkin Donuts back east? Can anybody tell me what the big deal is please?!

P.P.S - I did sneak in a random thrift shop and have a pretty amazing score to share with you.

Shirt - H&M (The Hubs - he wore it to the wedding the night before)
Boots - Aldo
(Stella is wearing her hippie-cool, older cousin's shirt as a dress)

These streets will make you feel brand new. Big lights will inspire you..

An unexpected, but pleasant surprise had me at dinner and drinks last night, in the heart of the city with one of my favorite friends in the whole world.
With bachelorette madness behind us, and a weekend of wedding whirlwind ahead...
I was happy to steal a moment with my old LA roommate, my confidant for over a decade, and one of those best friends who just last.
(Much like my gorgeous girlfriend here about to say her vows!)
Have a blissful weekend and remember those who have stuck by you, year after year.

For my Martin and Jen Brown...

All photos taken on my iPhone. I'm wearing vintage red silk pants, thrifted Mexi top & Stuart Weitzman Apron Clogs.

What I wore to the airport.

Wednesday, August 17, 2011

Off to my best friend's bachelorette party and wedding weekend! So excited for all of the events to come. I'll be sure to share the highlights with you, including the little red Mexi dress I wore as a bridesmaid! (See how I wore it casual style on Secondhand Star here before all of the tailoring!)

And pop on over to Secondhand Star today to read the story on how this fitted coral blazer came to life! (Hint: it used to be a stained white yard sale find. I know!)

Downtown LA $2.99 Tank Top!

Monday, August 15, 2011

Oh, the joys and thrills of bargain hunting. (I also love me a good, designer shoe, don't get me wrong...) but when my top is cooler than the one for ten times as much, I win!
I love finding a statement tee that will work with leggings, heels and my fave black blazer in a pinch.
I showed you yesterday how I went on a major downtown LA shopping trip and found some serious goodies.
And I couldn't wait to wear one of the two favorite tees I found for just $2.99!
PS - Check in tomorrow to see what I wore to the airport - heading out to my best friend's bachelorette party!

Sunday Finds - Monday Morning - Downtown LA!

Shaking it up a bit from my usual thrifting jive, I took a trip to downtown LA, where rows & rows of fabric took center stage.
So many goodies to be found, I wonder why I don't head out there more often. I found GORGEOUS outdoor fabric to recover our backyard swing... (For 6.50/yard - which is insane, people.)
Tucked inside a remnant bag was the most beautiful orange fabric...
And would you believe it? It was the perfect length for a scarf! It had me out 50 cents.
Sometimes scores downtown are totally random, like this adorable bow belt, tossed into a box full of zippers. I snatched one up right away, as I can see this paired perfectly over a winter sheath.
Also 50 cents. (See the marked box above?)
But my fave, fave, fave score of the day...
Two super rad tanks that had me out $2.99 each! I grabbed them on impulse and didn't even try them on. (Something I rarely do...)
But once I got them home and worked them into my wardrobe, I realized just how perfect they were. (How cute is the back detail?)
Check back in tomorrow to see how I styled one! Have a happy week, loves. xx

Hi friends! I thought I'd show you how I wore this (fave) dress of mine for a night out... An early evening stroll and dinner at dusk at one of our favorite restaurants, was the perfect opportunity to give it another go-round. (Casual version here.)

Happy weekend!
